they began questioning themselves; had they not taken the right path? had the walked astray from their normal route? that would be virtually impossible, since the boys had walked it so many times & could practically dream it. they walked up to where the cabin used to stand, & started to examine the soil, which was covered in tall grass as if nothing & no-one had been there in years. the two were completely baffled at their findings. then bernard suddenly saw something laying in the grass. he walked over & picked it up. it turned out to be a little shiny statue of jesus which looked like it was made out of ivory. bernard looked at it for a while & then showed it to oswald, who slowly shook his head in disbelief. then bernard carefully put the statue in his pocket. they stayed there for a few more minutes, clearing the soil of leaves & grass to see if there was anything more to be found. when that appeared not to be the case, they decided to go home. they sat on their beds the rest of the afternoon, not saying a word, but thinking about what they had seen & wondering how all this could've come to pass. then oswald broke the silence by mentioning that it suddenly appeared to him that no-one but them & isabella had ever met the old rosenthal, & he had never heard anyone mentioning him. they decided then & there to keep it a secret, since nobody was probably going to believe them anyway. & so it came to be that oswald van de karbargenbock & bernard kraaijendonk were burdened by the loss of a dear friend & an unsolved mystery. it was then they decided to call themselves glossy jesus, after the little statue they had found, which was the only tangible thing they had left that reminded them of isabella & rosenthal. furthermore, they would sing only of lost love & confusion, trying to express their deepest feelings; it was to be folk music of the purest nature.
